The world's largest mink producer, Denmark, says it plans to cull more than million animals, due to fears that a Covid- mutation will spread from mink to humans and could jeopardize future vaccines.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that people are already infected with the mutated virus and that mink is now considered a public health risk.
"It may be a risk for the vaccine to be effective given that the virus has mutated in minks," Frederiksen explained.
He said the army, poli Caseno Email List ce and national emergency service will be mobilized to help farms with the mink cull, which will eradicate the entire Danish herd.
Authorities and breeders have already been culling animals for the past few weeks in a bid to contain the spread of Covid-
Reuters reported that Denmark's health minister said about half of the people infected in northern Denmark, home to a large number of mink farmers, had infections stemming from the farms.
Denmark is the world's largest producer of mink fur and has to million animals on about , farms. According to the information, the latest figures given by the Danish Food and Veterinary Administration explain that Covid- infections have been found in more than two hundred mink farms. The figures were confirmed by a Danish police press officer.
Finnish fur auctioneer Magnus Ljung, CEO of Saga Furs, was watching the Danish advertisement. “It's a shock. They will kill all the minks in Denmark. “They are talking about the risk of Covid- mutating in mink, moving from mink to humans and potentially affecting a future human vaccine.”
Ljung estimated the value of Denmark's mink population to be between € million and € million.
They have managed to take control of Covid- mink infections in the Netherlands and there were some cases in Spain and Sweden. It was under control though. The Danish massacre is unexpected. It can also occur in other countries. But I don’t want to speculate,” Ljung said.
“What we really need to do is completely end mink farming and retrain farmers,” said Birgitte Damm, policy advisor and veterinarian at the NGO Animal Protection Denmark.
Speaking from Amsterdam, Dr Joanna Swabe, senior director of public affairs at Humane Society International/Europe, said: “Denmark is one of the largest fur producers on the planet, so the complete closure of all Danish fur farms of mink amid the rising Covid- infection is a significant development.
“This is not a restriction on mink farms, this guideline marks the end of the suffering of caged animals on Danish fur farms only for the purpose of a fashion that is expendable and that no person needs. The Danish Prime Minister must be congratulated for the firm decision she made that was so important.
